I want to show you how you can save a lot of time when you’re starting to learn Oracle DBA skills.
Most of the Oracle Databases run on UNIX or Linux platforms. I don’t have any numbers to show you. But I am pretty sure it’s more like 80 percent UNIX/Linux and 20 percent windows.
What’s clear is you need to get your hands on UNIX/Linux machine somehow.
When I started learning Oracle, this is what I used to do.
1) Install VMWare Workstation
2) Install RHEL as guest OS
3) Install Oracle Database
The first time I tried to do all the above things, obviously it took like a week to figure things out.
While it does help to learn to install RHEL etc., I felt like I spent too much time doing things other than learning Oracle Database Administration. And please note it’s not easy to find licensed copies of VMWare Workstation or RHEL unless you have a friend who owns them.
Here’s an alternative method.
1) Download and Install Oracle Virtual Box
2) Download and Import Pre-Built Developer VMs – comes with OEL (Oracle Enterprise Linux) & Oracle 12c Database Installation

Voila !!! You have everything you need to get started.
